Tunes and Time Signatures Workshop

Have you ever wanted to understand what the numbers you see in printed music mean? Do you want to be able to hear a song and figure out how to count the beat along with it? Do you want to understand what makes a piece of music feel the way it does?

Come learn these things and more at the Tunes and Time Signatures workshop!

Co-taught by two professional musicians, this workshop will teach you to feel confident working with time signatures. You will learn what time signatures communicate, and how to apply that to your playing. The workshop is open to all musicians aged eighteen and up, and will include group instruction, demonstration, and time to practice your skills.

By the end of this workshop you will have a deeper understanding of time signatures. You will have enhanced your ability to count along to music as you listen and play, and to create rhythmic feels with intention. You will have also had opportunity to practice this work with other developing musicians!

Sight Reading Workshop

Saturday, November 14, 2026 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Have you ever wanted to understand how to read music? Do you want to be able to sit down and play a piece of music without hearing it first? Do you want to be able to efficiently share your music with others in a detailed way?

Come learn these things and more at the Sight Reading workshop!

Co-taught by two professional musicians, this workshop will teach you the basics of sight reading. You will learn how pitch and rhythm are communicated in western music notation, and how to play as you read. The workshop is open to all musicians aged eighteen and up, and will include group instruction, demonstration, and time to practice your skills.

By the end of this workshop you will have gained an introduction to reading and playing written music. You will have developed your ability to build music from a page, and to translate music you hear into notation. You will have also had opportunity to practice this work with other developing musicians!

Play Music Together From a Lead Sheet Workshop

Saturday, December 12, 2026 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Do you want to develop your ability to play music with other people, or perhaps try it for the first time? Do you want to understand how to work from a framework of a song instead of having a specific part assigned to you? Do you want to have more freedom to be creative while you play?

Come learn these things and more at the Play Music Together From a Lead Sheet workshop!

Co-taught by two professional musicians, this workshop will build on the three previous fall workshops to teach you how to use a lead sheet (which communicates a song’s time signature, chords, and melody). You will learn to turn a lead sheet into a song played by a band, focusing on developing your own part and playing with a group. The workshop is open to all musicians aged eighteen and up, and will include group instruction, demonstration, and directed group rehearsal time.

By the end of this workshop you will have a deeper understanding of lead sheets and how to use them in your playing. You will have developed your ability to start with a written framework of song and turn it into a group performance. You will have also had opportunity to play as part of a band!
